She is a 12-year-old from Kabale Primary School. Joan is a very bright girl who was the second in her class on promotion from P6 to P7.
She is from a family of 4 children and a single mother who is a nurse at Makango Hospital. The father abandoned them leaving the mother to fend for the 4 children on her small salary. The eldest son is in a school that pays more than the salary their mother earns at her job. The family lives in a single room at the hospital quarters.
Joan wants to be doctor when she finishes school. She draws inspiration from her mother career and is determined to follow in her footsteps. She is a very religious child. Her mother told us that Joan’s faith in God has helped her go through all the struggles they are facing as a family with her head held high, and with hope that things will get better. She always tells her mother not to worry, that things shall be ok and that she will read hard so that she can become a doctor, get money and help her siblings and other kids who are from families like hers.
Joan is able to perform well thanks to the help of her elder brother who coaches her during the holidays. He gives her as many exercises as he can from all subjects. The bond that the family of Joan has is what drives the children to work hard.
As a single mother facing her struggles head-on, Joan’s mum is inspiring many other single mothers to look past their struggles and do the best they can for their families.
Joan’s passion is dancing, especially traditional dance.
